CURRENT TOPIC: An Interesting Case

For June, the discussion will focuses on the ethical and emotional challenges faced by a physician dealing with a complex patient case, highlighting the tension between viewing patients as "interesting cases" for medical learning and recognizing their humanity and personal stories. This discussion and article tie into several of the ACGME Clinician Educator (CE) Milestones, including Universal Pillars 1 and 4, and Educational Theory and Practice 2, 7, and 10, with an overall focus on reflective practice, personal growth, and professionalism. Speaker Samantha J Magier, MD, MEng, will talk about her article, "An Interesting Case", with moderator Laura Edgar, EdD, CAE, Senior Vice President of Competencies, Milestones, and Faculty Development at the ACGME. Participants should be sure to read the article ahead of the session and come with any questions.
SPEAKERS:
Samantha J Magier, MD, MEng Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy Fellow Brigham and Women’s Hospital Dr. Samantha Magier has a long-standing dedication to education and healthcare improvement. She attended Lehigh University for undergraduate and graduate school with a Master of Engineering in Healthcare Systems Engineering. She then studied at University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine during which time she developed quality improvement curricula and was involved in peer teaching and mentorship. She subsequently completed internal medicine residency at Yale and a chief residency in quality and safety at the West Haven VA/Yale. As a chief resident she focused on improving patient outcomes through various QI efforts and developing a curriculum to promote psychological safety for trainees surrounding medical error and patient safety. She is completing her first year of fellowship in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is clinically interested in medical and interventional management of obesity. She plans to incorporate medical education during fellowship as a teaching fellow for Harvard UME gastroenterology courses, and continue quality improvement efforts with focus on endoscopy and operational optimization.
Laura Edgar, EdD, CAE Senior Vice President, Competencies, Milestones, and Faculty Development ACGME Dr. Edgar is the Senior Vice President for ACGME. She provides leadership for the oversite, development, innovation, and maintenance of domestical and international competencies, Milestones program, and faculty development. She serves as an ACGME ambassador to and collaborator with internal (e.g., ACGME-I, global services, education, review committees) and external (e.g., program director groups, certification boards, medical specialty groups) stakeholders to advance the implementation of competencies, Milestones, faculty development, and other ACGME strategic initiatives.
Prior to working at ACGME, Dr. Edgar worked in the clinical laboratory for 10 years and then directed several domestic and international certification, accreditation, and scientific organizations. Dr. Edgar earned her doctorate in education, focusing on organizational leadership, after obtaining a Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory sciences, and a Master's degree in business administration.
