Dear Students and Parents,
I
want to thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work through
this unprecedented and challenging time.
Marian
has taken a number of precautions to keep our campus safe over the past week,
including the cancellation or postponement of events that bring large crowds to
campus, such as Wednesday’s Global Studies Speaker Lecture and tonight’s Saint
John’s Bible event. Today, we are taking the additional step of giving faculty
members the autonomy to offer alternative methods of instruction, including
online delivery, if they feel it is in the best interests of their students.
Marian has successfully taught classes online for more than a decade; we take
this step with confidence in our ability to deliver a high quality academic
experience with exceptional outcomes for our students.
What
This Means:
- We
are proceeding with an abundance of caution to minimize the spread of
coronavirus (COVID-19) on our campus and in our community.
- Our
campus will remain open, and students will still have access to the residence
halls, dining facilities, Student Health Center, counseling services, fitness center,
library, and all other services provided by Marian University faculty and
staff.
- Online
delivery may not be possible in all cases. Faculty have the
ability to determine the best method of instruction for their courses. This may mean continuing as planned, moving to a hybrid model
where some activities are online, or a completely online model.
- Students who live in the area, or who will not
have on-campus instruction for the next two weeks, are free to return to their
permanent residences as long as they have the technology and means to keep up
with their academic work from home.
- Your
professors will contact you by 5 p.m. today to inform you how your classes
will be taught while this policy is in effect.
-
All
intercollegiate competitions will be suspended through at least March 31,
2020. Practices may continue at the discretion of the director of athletics and
coaches. Coaches will communicate practice schedules to
their student-athletes by 5 p.m. today.
What
This Doesn’t Mean:
- We are
not closing campus.
- We
are not canceling any academic work or requirements.
This new policy will be in effect
through March 27, 2020. At that time, we will reassess the situation and
determine the course of action going forward. We will continue to daily monitor
COVID-19 spread in the state and community and will take additional actions to
protect our campus as warranted.
I
want to remind everyone who may be experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 to consult
a physician immediately. Please do not return to campus until you have been
cleared by your physician.
Finally,
let’s remember the individuals and families who have been impacted by this
virus and pray for their full recoveries.
Sincerely,
Daniel J. Elsener President |
