Advanced Education in the Care of Persons with Alzheimer's & DementiaLong term care professionals who are interested in advanced training
in dementia caregiving will want to register for Care of Persons with
Alzheimer’s and Dementia, a course coordinated by the University of
Indianapolis Center for Aging & Community on behalf of the Indiana State Department of Health. The course
offers in-depth training for clinicians interested in advancing their
knowledge and skills in working with patients who have Alzheimer’s
disease and other dementias.
Format
Three-day, interactive, face-to-face training course. The course is presented as two consecutive days, with the third day approximately 10 days after the first two.

Objectives By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Explain the main characteristics of dementia/Alzheimer’s including stages, disease progression, and the difference between dementia and delirium.
- Decrease the likelihood of unwanted dementia-related behaviors by having appropriate behavioral expectations of the resident and knowing how to structure activities for a positive outcome.
- Distinguish between and demonstrate how to defuse four categories of challenging behaviors: verbal nonaggressive, physical nonaggressive, verbal aggressive and physical aggressive.
- Outline the key components of a successful care plan for a resident with dementia/Alzheimer’s.
- Describe sustainable facility-wide strategies for the management of challenging behaviors.

CredentialParticipants receiving a score of 75% or above on the course final
exam will receive a Certificate of Training: Advanced Education in Care
of Persons with Alzheimer’s and Dementia from the Indiana State
Department of Health. CEUs are available for administrators and social
workers.
